Summary:The present study is a work on a single-pass full penetration hybrid laser-metal inter gas (MIG) welding of 8-mm-thick pure copper (T2) in butt joint configuration without any heat treatment before the welding process. The effect of process parameters and joint configuration on the geometry and integrity of the joint was studied and then analyzed with the aid of digital camera through high-speed imaging. The optimized joint configuration and optimal welding parameters were experimentally investigated. The fusion zone showed an aspect ratio of about 1.43, the ratio of plate thickness to weld width. Nondestructive X-ray inspection revealed that the joint could satisfy the requirement of a nondestructive test of pressure equipment standard JB/T4730–2005.
