GABAergic signaling in primary lens epithelial and lentoid cells and its involvement in intracellular Ca2+ modulation

Highlights ► We demonstrate functional GABA signaling in primary mouse lens epithelial cell cultures. ► Glutamic acid decarboxylase, GABA receptors, transporters and GABA are all abundantly expressed. ► GABAA and GABAB receptor agonists or GABA induce synergistic rise of intracellular Ca2+ . ► Persi...

Summary:Highlights ► We demonstrate functional GABA signaling in primary mouse lens epithelial cell cultures. ► Glutamic acid decarboxylase, GABA receptors, transporters and GABA are all abundantly expressed. ► GABAA and GABAB receptor agonists or GABA induce synergistic rise of intracellular Ca2+ . ► Persistent activation of the GABAB receptors induces wave propagation of the Ca2+ wave and persistent oscillations. ► The GABA receptor mediated Ca2+ responses are sensitive to antagonists and extracellular Ca2+.
