Summary:•The eggshell membranes and their characteristics as separators are reviewed.•The small surface area between fibers was observed.•The battery assembled with CEM shows the best cycling performance. In this work, several eggshell membranes and their properties as membrane separators for lithium-ion batteries are investigated. The crystalline phases, morphologies and electrochemical properties of eggshell membranes are characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, CV, EIS, and charge/discharge test. As a result, among eggshell membranes, the chicken eggshell membrane shows the higher amount of protein fiber with the smaller surface area. The battery assembled with chicken eggshell membrane indicates the substitutive option for the traditional separator with the capacity of 90 and 87 mAh g−1 at 1st and 150th cycles, respectively.
