Summary:► Isothermal sections of Lu–Ni–Sn system were constructed at two temperatures. ► Two new ternary intermetallics were found and their crystal structure was refined. ► Three new binary compounds were found in Lu–Ni system. ► Comparison with other R–Ni–Sn systems was made. The phase equilibria in the Lu–Ni–Sn ternary system were studied at 770 K (up to 50 at.% Sn) and 670 K (more than 50 at.% Sn) by means of X-ray and metallographic analyses in the whole concentration range. The Lu–Ni–Sn system is characterized by formation of 10 ternary intermetallic compounds at investigated temperatures: LuNi 5Sn (CeCu 5Au-type), LuNi 4Sn (MgCu 4Sn-type), Lu 6Ni 2Sn (Ho 6Co 2Ga-type), Lu 2Ni 2Sn (Mo 2FeB 2-type), LuNi 2Sn (MnCu 2Al-type), LuNi 2− x Sn (YbNi 2− x Sn-type), LuNiSn (TiNiSi-type), LuNiSn 2 (LuNiSn 2-type), Lu 2NiSn 6 (Lu 2NiSn 6-type), and LuNiSn 4 (LuNiSn 4-type). Three new binary compounds, LuNi 3 (PuNi 3-type), Lu 3Ni 2 (Er 3Ni 2-type), and Lu 3Ni (Fe 3C-type), were found in the Lu–Ni system.
