Summary:This paper summarizes the geographic information system (GIS) and modelling activities of the Munich Research Association for Agricultural Ecosystems (FAM), which is a joint project of the GSF-National Research Centre for Environment and Health. Oberschleissheim, and the Technical University of Munich. In particular, the agro-ecological information system (AIS) within the FAM will be presented. Simulation models will be provided in a GIS to forecast and assess ecological risks of different management practices. The AIS is based on two different scales: one is a farm called ‘Klostergut Scheyern’ (149 ha), designed as a monitoring network with a cell resolution of 50 m × 50 m, the other is the surrounding area, a landscape of 547 km 2. The paper describes the spatial input data as well as the model structure of the two different scales. Finally, first results for calculating the soil water budget on the farm level, and nitrate leaching on the landscape level will be presented.
