Summary:A study determined the sequences of the rpb1 gene fragment in diatoms of different taxonomic level; to perform a comparative analysis of these sequences with the homologous sequences of protists, fungi, plants, animals, and archaea deposited in GenBank; and to assess the applicability of the rpb1 fragment for use as a phylogenetic marker. This was the first study to decode the sequences of the nuclear gene rpb1 of several diatom species from different classes. The sufficiently high level of variability of the relevant fragment in diatoms makes it possible to perform genetic reconstructions with resolution at the generic level.
