Summary:Lake George, Uganda, lies on the equator and shows little variation in temperature or in the dominance of Microcystis in the phytoplankton. The dominant planktonic rotifers in Lake George are compared to those found in lakes in other parts of the world, ranging from tropical and subtropical lakes with semi-permanent blooms of Microcystis to temperate localities with summer blooms or less regular blooms at multiannual intervals. A modified Sorensen Similarity Index is used to show a latitudinal gradient in the rotifers associated with Microcystis.
