Summary:The momentum-loss spectra of near forward scattered protons on deuterons measured by Amaldi et al. [1] have been interpreted using an improved version of the multiple scattering theory presented previously [2]. All qualitative features of the spectra are reproduced over a range of 9 decades in the double differential cross section. The conclusion of Amaldi et al. that the p - p and p - n differential elastic cross sections are very similar is supported. An indication is found for a difference in the hadronic production cross section, the p - n cross section being roughly only 60% of the p - p cross section for the invariant mass squared range 1.0 < M ∗2 < 2.0 ( GeV) 2 and for the four-momentum transfer squared range 1.4 < q 2 < 6 (GeV/ c) 2.
