Summary: | The main purpose of this study was to extract
Alternaria alternata antigens for evaluating the skin allergic reactions and specific anti-
A. alternata IgE in asthmatic patients.
Eighty-eight patients with asthma (46 male, 42 female) and 40 non-atopic individuals were enrolled with sequential trials. Sensitization to
A. alternata antigens has been evaluated in asthmatic patients by skin prick test (SPT) and dot-blotting assay.
Positive SPT reactions were obtained on 70.5% of patients (
P
<
0.05). The males had more positive SPTs than female (
P
<
0.05). Specific anti-
A. alternata IgE antibody was detected in 46 (52.3%) of patients (strong positive responses) by dot-blotting test, but no specific IgE antibody was detected in control group (
P
<
0.05). However, 16 (18.2%) sera of patients showed weak positive IgE dot-blotting results in respect to sex and age, and no significant difference was observed.
We confirmed that different allergenic components of
A. alternata may play an important role in producing signs of asthma in the sensitive patients.
