Summary:The title compound, {[Ni(L)(bbi)(H 2 O) 3 ]·(H 2 O)} n (I), where H 2 L = 4-methylphthalic acid and bbi = 1,1′-(1,4-butanediyl) bis(imidazole), crystallizes in the triclinic form with space group Pī and exhibits a 1D metal-organic chain. The Ni II cation is coordinated to four O atoms from one L 2- ligand and three coordinated water molecules, respectively, and two N atoms from two different bbi ligands, and these six donor atoms form an octahedral configuration. The bbi ligands connect the Ni II cations to form infinite chains, with the L ligands hanging on the two sides, which are further linked by rich hydrogen bonding system to generate a 3D supramolecular structure.
