In-plane limit moment for an elbow. Lower-bound analytical solution and finite element processing by elastic compensation method

Based on the equilibrium equations used by Reissner and Clark, we suggest a closed-form lower-bound solution of the limit moment for an infinite elbow (without adjacent straight sections) in-plane bending, which improves the solution suggested by Calladine. Summary:Based on the equilibrium equations used by Reissner and Clark, we suggest a closed-form lower-bound solution of the limit moment for an infinite elbow (without adjacent straight sections) in-plane bending, which improves the solution suggested by Calladine. The finite element solution is simultaneously obtained by means of a module programmed with the Castem 2000 code, which enables the perfectly plastic problem to be solved by means of a sequence of incompressible elastic calculations.
