Summary:The effect of low-energy ion beam assisted deposition on the magnetic and microstructural properties of Co 1− x Pt x alloy films in the composition range 0.2⩽ x⩽0.75 is studied. Magnetic hysteresis and transmission electron microscopy results are presented. In the Co-rich region, the imposition of an ion beam during film growth induces a faulted microstructure and high coercivities. In the vicinity of x=0.5 and 0.75, the ion beam assisted deposition does not modify the coercivity and has no noticeable effect on the microstructure. The possible origin of these effects is discussed.
