Summary: | An ATM switch architecture that uses optical delay fibers as buffers is presented. Based on the remarkable properties of the Fibonacci numbers, the architecture requires few fibers and yields low cell loss rates and latencies across diverse time-correlated and heavily loaded traffic profiles, Moreover, the control algorithm of the architecture is computationally efficient and can be executed in real time. Simulation studies indicate that the cell loss rate decreases exponentially as the number of fibers increases and that the probability mass function for the cell latency decays rapidly as the latency increases. |
