Summary:Simplified procedures for colorimetric and volumetric determination of lead in steel were investigated by use of dithizone method. The separation of lead in large amount of iron was effected by the following procedure: 0.10.3 g sample was decomposed with HCl-H2O2 or H2SO4-HNO3 mixture, the oxidizing agent was boiled off, NH4OH added until the solution remained slightly acid, reduced with NH2OH-HCl, Rochelle salt added, made alkaline with NH4OH, then treated with KCN to convert the iron as a complex salt, in which all the Fe+++ was converted to Fe++, the solution was heated on a water bath until it turned clear yellow, cooled to room temperature, the leadwas extracted with dithizone-CCl4 solution and the lead in CCl4 layer was estimated by colorimetric or extractive titrime tric method. The estimation of lead in steel by this method could be made in 20 to 40 minutes.
