Summary:The serological relationships between vaccinia virus (an Orthopoxvirus) and myxoma virus (a Leporipoxvirus) were investigated by the techniques of micro-immunodiffusion and virus neutralization. Immunodiffusion tests demonstrated clear-cut but relatively minor cross-reactivity between the soluble antigens of the two viruses. The cross-reacting fraction of myxoma soluble antigen showed no serological relationship to vaccinia N.P. antigen. The results of virus neutralization tests were equivocal. Results of immunodiffusion tests varied greatly with antigen concentration and other technical factors, and it is suggested that such variation may explain the conflicting data obtained in previous comparative studies with soluble antigens of different poxvirus genera.
