Summary:A review of the historical aspects of barbiturate use, misuse and abuse is presented. The practicability of control of the drugs, recommendations to effect such control, and the implications to forensic science laboratories are discussed. Analytical techniques applicable to enforcement of proposed legislation are reviewed ; these include chromatographic (thin-layer, gas-liquid, and high-performance liquid chromatography) and spectroscopic (ultraviolet, infrared, mass spectrometry, and proton magnetic resonance) procedures.
