Summary:David’s history is from the perspective of a lifetime involvement in raising and racing thoroughbred horses, whereas mine reflects a similar commitment and experience in the beef cattle industry. Later in life, he sold the wholesale business but retained the building it housed, which he, Lovena, and his children later donated to become the site for establishment of the Kentucky Folk Art Center. Following graduation from medical school, he was recruited as an intern and resident to the Department of Surgery at UK and spent 2 years there. Perhaps none is more illustrative of that than his willingness to give a detailed account and go on public record to a newspaper reporter about the deterioration in the management of trauma patients at the U of L Hospital that had arisen after the hospital had been taken over by another hospital system.
