Summary:A successful transurethral resection of the prostate was performed without complication in a 66-year-old man who presented with acute urinary retention, anemia, leukemia and thrombocytopenia. Preoperative treatment with red cell and platelet transfusions, HLA typing for white cell transfusions and preventative antibiotics made surgical treatment successful. With continued improvement in therapy for hematologic tumors and the improvement in survival, catheter drainage with its concomitant chance for sepsis is not a viable alternative to surgical therapy for prostatism.
