Summary:A critical review of the methods for the study of cerebrospinal fluid formation (CSF) is presented and the information obtained from these methods and from the effect of metabolic inhibitors is discussed. The models by which epithelia secrete fluid are briefly reviewed in relation to morphology, recent junctional classification and physiological observations. The application of these models to CSF secretion is correlated with recent morphological findings and a new tentative model of the secretion mechanism is postulated.
