Summary: | The effect of storing platelet suspensions at room temperature before assessing platelet adhesiveness to glass was investigated. Changes found in adhesiveness depended on the albumin concentration of the suspension medium. The initial rate of platelet adhesion was inversely related to albumin concentration. Thereafter, during a 4-hr period, platelet adhesion decreased in suspensions with low (0–0.35%) albumin concentrations, whereas at higher concentrations, the adhesion was either not affected (1% albumin) or increased (2% albumin). These observations are explained by the different and opposite effects of albumin which adsorbs to glass more quickly than the platelets and improves the viability of the platelets during storage. |
