Summary: | The sublingual regions of seventy-three human postmortem tongues were examined histologically. The age range was 6 to 85 years. The study indicated that increasing age was associated with an increase in size and number of large vessels and also an increase in the amount of fat and elastic tissue in the submucosa. Statistical analysis failed to show any significant correlation between the connective tissue changes and the appearances of the varices. A hemodynamic theory for their pathogenesis is proposed. |
