Temperature acclimation in the nervous system of the brown bullhead ( Ictalurus nebulosus)

Summary:1. 1. The gustatory response of the brown bullhead ( Ictalurus nebulosus) was used as an indicator system for assessing the nature and location of temperature acclimation in the nervous system. 2. 2. Complete acclimation was found to occur in the brains of cold-acclimated but not warm-acclimated animals. No acclimatory response was found in either the peripheral sensory nerves or the spinal portion of the reflex pathway. 3. 3. Data presented in this study support the theory that the synapse is the primary locus of acclimatory responses although the actual mechanism of compensation remains unknown.
