Summary: | A rapid, sensitive assay for plasma arginase was developed by modifying and combining existing procedures. Normal levels of plasma arginase activity for the rat as well as physiological variations due to starvation or cortisone were determined. Liver damage was produced in rats with carbon tetrachloride and the extent of damage was evaluated by plasma arginase, plasma glutamic pyruvate transaminase as well as by histopathology.
Plasma arginase activity proved to be a sensitive indicator of acute hepatocellular necrosis because the increase in plasma arginase activity was directly proportional to the dose of hepatotoxin and plasma activity was not raised by cirrhosis. |
