Abstract There are significant differences in the behaviour of oxy-, deoxy- and ferrihaemoglobin when studied under dissociating conditions by the Sephadex method. The dissociation of oxyhaemoglobin appears to be insensitive to a change of pH from 7.0 to 5.5, in the absence of acetate, but to be promoted by high ionic strength. On the other hand, ferrihaemoglobin was found to be sensitive to both changes of pH and ionic strength, while deoxyhaemoglobin was not.
