Effect of food intake on diel variation in plasma thyroid hormone levels in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri

Trout fed once each day (0930 hr) and held on a 12L:12D light cycle (0800–2000 hr light) show a diel change in plasma T 4 and T 3, the highest levels occuring at 0900 to 1300 hr and the lowest levels at 0500 to 0900 hr. In agreement with a previous study, 3 days of starvation eliminated the diel var...

Summary:Trout fed once each day (0930 hr) and held on a 12L:12D light cycle (0800–2000 hr light) show a diel change in plasma T 4 and T 3, the highest levels occuring at 0900 to 1300 hr and the lowest levels at 0500 to 0900 hr. In agreement with a previous study, 3 days of starvation eliminated the diel variation. Alteration in feeding time to 1630 hr did not shift the peak in plasma T 4 or T 3, indicating that the elevation in plasma T 4 and T 3 at 0900 to 1300 hr is not a direct response to food intake.
