Summary:Report of a case in which 7 years after the healing of a benzene-induced pancytopenia a subacute haemoblastosis developed along with Pelgerisation of the granulocytes. At the same time direct bone marrow specimens revealed the emergence of a new cell line characterized by supernumerary D-group chromosomes. Other chromosomal anomalies were also present. Subacute granulocytic leukaemia has been diagnosed and confirmed by autopsy. The problem of the causal relationship between benzene poisoning and the haematological malignancy has been discussed briefly.
