Summary:In view of the existing problems associated with solvent extraction of rice bran oil in India, mechanical pressing was considered as a promising alternative. An attempt was made, therefore, to develop a test-cell to generate basic data at the laboratory level by a manually operated 20 tonne hydraulic press. The results showed that a maximum 45% oil was recovered at 12·5 MPa (127 kg/cm 2) for a holding time of 45 min without any hydrothermal treatment.
