Summary:Five hydrophilic and two hydrophobic fumed silicas of different surface area and particle size were added to solvent based polyurethane adhesives. Silica addition produced a noticeable increase in the adhesive viscosity, imparted negative thixotropy, increased the storage modulus (G') and improved the green adhesion of chlorinated rubber/PU adhesive/chlorinated rubber joints. Those modifications were more pronounced in the adhesives which contain hydrophilic silicas.
