Summary:The importance of exposure in respiratory relief therapies was investigated. Fifteen specific phobics with symptoms of similar duration and intensity were randomly allotted into three groups for a limited trial of treatment under similar conditions by simple exposure (E). respiratory relief (RR), and augmented respiratory relief (ARR). None in the E group benefited while all in the RR groups showed improvement, 50 per cent becoming symptom free. Despite small numbers this was statistically significant with regard to changes in anxiety ratings scales. This indicated that the exposure component of respiratory relief therapies was not the cause of the behavioural change.
