AAA Proteins: Lords of the Ring

Vale describes how AAA protein can be used to unfold or fold polypeptides, dissociate protein-protein interactions, and generate unidirectional motion along tracks. Recent structural and enzymatic data that shed light into the mechanism of the AAA module is also presented.
