Summary:Although ring rolling has the advantages of high efficiency and flexibility of productions, it also has disadvantages in shape accuracy. The authors suppose that the ring slips with respect to the main roll and that the slippage results in unstable operation and ovality of the rolled ring. In this study, hot ring rolling of the carbon steel ring with rectangular cross section was carried out. Peripheral speed of ring was measured by tracing a marker on side surface on recorded movie. It was found that peripheral speed of ring is close to that of the main roll, however, decreased as the rolling progresses. Faster roll closure rate results in larger decrease in ring speed. It was also found that ovality of rolled ring is caused by thickness distribution in circumferential direction.
