Synthesis and Study of Optical and Photocatalytic Properties of Mn and Sm Doped ZnS Grown by Sol-Gel

Summary:Optical and photocatalytic properties of ZnS, ZnS:Mn 2+ (20 and 30 wt%) and ZnS:Sm 3+ (20 and 30 wt%) samples formed by three coatings, were studied. The layers were deposited on glass substrate by the sol-gel dip coating process. The catalytic activity of the samples was determined by means of the photodecomposition of methylene blue under Ultra Violet and visible light irradiations. The Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrum of ZnS shows the presence of OH, N–H, N–C and S–H groups. The last two groups suggest the formation of a thiocyanuric group (NCS − ) on the surface of the sample which enables the photocatalytic activity of undoped ZnS and doped ZnS under visible light irradiation.
