Summary:Fluency refers to reading with proper speed, accuracy, and expression. Effective repeated oral reading procedures for older students with reading difficulties must therefore not only provide sufficient practice but also be motivating with a clear and meaningful purpose; fluency activities meeting both these criteria include reading and rereading song lyrics, open mike days, reading to younger children, content dictations, and timed-repeated readings. Sample offers a brief description of each of these strategies for addressing fluency in older students with reading difficulties and includes some suggested resources for implementation.
