Summary:Using ultrasonic A- and B-scan equipment (Kretz-Technik), the heart action and active movements of the embryo were recorded on a time motion display. Heart beats were detected as early as the 30th day after ovulation. After the 8th wk they were registered in every case of intact pregnancy. The earliest active movement of the embryo could be documentated on the 54th day after menstruation. Movements were present in all viable pregnancies after the 10th wk. Using the time motion technique, three different types could be distinguished: Movements of the body, movements of the extremities and combined complex activities. Frequency and complexity of the movements increased with growth of the embryo.
