Summary:The concept of velayat-e faqih, the guardianship or vice-regency of an Islamic jurist, a Shia form of Islamic government, gained currency after its introduction by the Ayatollah Khomeini following Iran's Islamic revolution in 1979. Its compatibility with democracy has become one of the most hotly debated subjects in contemporary Iranian politics. Broadly, there are three dominant strands in the debate: the official view of the Islamic Republic; that of traditional Iranian reformists; and that of Iranian Muslim intellectuals.
