Summary:In this contribution, the spectroscopic and magnetic properties of manganese ions in a rhombohedral LaAlO3 perovskite are reported. Micro powders were prepared by the Pechini method. We present absorption, excitation and emission spectra of LaAlO3 polycrystals doped with Mn4+ (3 d3) ions, as well as the luminescent decay time and temperature-dependent emission intensity measurements. The quantum yield of the LaAlO3:0.1% Mn4+ sample reaches 47%. We also show the electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum, which reveals the presence of Mn2+ ions. •Spectroscopic and paramagnetic properties of LaAlO3:Mn polycrystals were investigated.•The excitation spectrum possesses two broad bands with the maximum at 357 and 495 nm.•Calculated Racah parameters show that Mn4+ ions are located in a strong crystal field.•Observed red luminescence with the maximum at about 730 nm may be used in agriculture.
