Summary:Stainless steel (STS) has good strength and corrosion resistance. However, it is not suitable for use in deep water because it is vulnerable to low-temperature brittleness. High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are suitable for use in the deep sea because they have low-temperature twins and passivation layers formed by Cr. In this study, to select a suitable material for use as a structural material, the electrochemical properties of a high-entropy alloy and stainless steel were analyzed for comparative evaluation of their corrosion resistance. The potentiodynamic polarization and critical pitting temperature (CPT) were determined to evaluate the corrosion resistance of the passivation layer. The corrosion resistance of STS differed according to the type, whereas the corrosion resistance of the HEA decreased after pressing. Among the STS samples, SDSS2507 was more suitable for use in seawater than STS304L or STS316L. Despite the low corrosion resistance of the HEAs in surficial seawater, they are suitable for use in deep seas where the Cl ion concentration is low.
