Summary: | Two new rootstock cultivars of melon (Cucumis melo) resistant to race 1,2y of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis were released. Melon production of Hokkaido prefecture has been severely damaged ever since Fusarium wilt caused by race 1,2y first occurred there in 1993. In cooperation with the National Institute of Vegetable and Tea Science, we introduced some indigenous cultivars of Cucumis melo var. conomon with incomplete resistance to this race. 'Dodai No.1' was selected from the progeny of a cross between 'Melon Parental Line 1' and 'Tokyo-wase (maruba)'. In artificial inoculation tests, 'Dodai No.1' showed incomplete but remarkable resistance to race 1,2y and complete resistance to race 0, but was susceptible to race 2. The F1 cultivar 'Dodai No. 2', developed from a cross of 'Barnett Hill Favorite' and 'Dodai No.1', showed complete resistance to races 0 and 2 and moderate resistance to race 1,2y. Both cultivars were graft compatible with major scion cultivars and effectively controlled Fusarium wilt of melon caused by race 1,2y when used as rootstocks in infested fields of productive areas in Hokkaido. |
