Summary:1,1′-Bis[squaramido]ferrocenes (FcSq 2 ) are introduced as electrochemically active scaffolds for sulfate recognition. FcSq 2 display high sulfate-binding affinity and selectivity in aqueous DMSO mixtures. Among tested anions, sulfate elicits a unique electrochemical response in FcSq 2 , enabling selective detection. The bis[squaramido]ferrocene scaffold is introduced and shown to selectively bind and electrochemically report sulfate in competitive water/DMSO mixtures.
