Summary:Treated toothbrushes simulating five wear stages were tested on dental hygiene students for their plaque removal effectiveness using a novel sensitive methodology. Increasing brush wear produced considerable decreases in plaque removal with bristle matting being more detrimental than bristle tapering. It is recommended that a brush of conventional design be replaced at the first signs of matting.
