Summary:In terms of measuring serum electrolytes and renal function, although abnormalities may be found, few clinically affect outcome, and early renal insufficiency may not be revealed on a blood urea nitrogen (BUN)/creatinine test [3]. Due to the Choosing Wisely campaign, there may be an overall trend in preoperative medicine to order fewer diagnostic tests. [...]the described findings might not be related to protocol changes. Another consideration is that this study does not address common issues like provider compliance with the protocol, turnover within the surgical and preoperative evaluation clinics, and cancellations that occurred before the day of surgery.
