Summary:•Tensile property of Al84Gd6Ni7Co3 glass reinforced Al matrix composites.•Both matrix and reinforcement belong to the family of Aluminium based alloys.•Good interfacial bonding.•Improved tensile property for the glass reinforced composite. An Al matrix composite reinforced with devitrified metallic glass particles has been prepared by powder metallurgy with the aim of studying the effect of particles addition on microstructure and mechanical properties. Room temperature tensile tests reveal a significant improvement of the mechanical properties with respect to the unreinforced Al matrix: yield and tensile strength increase, respectively, from 75MPa and 122MPa for pure Al to about 93MPa and 157MPa for the composite. However, the observed tensile strength is lower than the calculated strength due to the fragmentation of the reinforcing particles during hot extrusion.
