Summary: | Multiple and dual relationships between client and counselor have been the topic of much discussion in our field. In 2005, the American Counseling Association revised and updated the code of ethics that further delineated the guidelines around these types of relationships. The impact of the code is addressed via a case study to demonstrate the issues surrounding multiple relationships in a personal, nonromantic relationship that had been established, prior to the therapeutic relationship. Implications of the previous relationship and the ethical decision-making process are addressed as well as recommendations for practitioners. |
