Oxidation of a ZrB2 coating fabricated on Ta–W alloy by electrophoretic deposition and laser melting

Summary:An oxidation resistant ZrB2 ceramic coating was fabricated on a Ta–W alloy by using a two-step process: electrophoretic deposition of ZrB2 powder coating and then densification by laser melting. The ZrB2 coating effectively prevented the Ta–W alloy from heavy external oxidation and deep granular internal oxidation at 2000°C in air. •A ZrB2 coating was developed by a new two-step process of EPD plus laser melting.•The ZrB2 coating was dense and uniform.•A ZrO2 layer was formed from the ZrB2 coating at 2000°C in air.•The ZrO2 layer significantly prevented Ta–W alloy from oxidation.
