Summary:MgO and NiO decorated graphenaceous composite was synthesized using a simple synthesis procedure that involved rudimentary combustion of a ball-milled blend of NiO powder and Mg metal turnings in the presence of dry ice and subsequent acid wash. Structural analysis (X-ray and electron diffraction studies) showed the presence of MgO and NiO along with few-layered graphene in the product. Electron microscopy studies clearly showed the decoration of MgO and NiO nanoparticles on the surfaces of FLG. Additionally, the presence of FLG in the product was confirmed by high-resolution electron microscopy and Raman scattering analysis. •Rudimentary combustion synthesis of MgO and NiO decorated graphenaceous composite.•MgO and NiO nanoparticles are crystalline.•Presence of tubular features with walls similar to those of MWCNTs.•Presence of wavy few-layered grapheme.•Graphene features are decorated with MgO and NiO nanoparticles.
