Summary: | Kiley et al discuss research accomplishments in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep. Recognizing that asthma remains a major public health concern in adults and children alike, there has been great progress in characterizing the heterogeneity of this "disease," or spectrum of disease(s), with a panoply of pathobiological mechanisms that affect disease expression, persistence, and severity. This understanding of disease heterogeneity has led to significant progress in the development of asthma pharmacologic treatments. Research on sleep and circadian rhythm disorders has exploded, with new advances that clearly demonstrate that sleep is required for overall health and well-being across the lifespan. |
