Summary: | Wierzbicka (2004) offers an engaging case concerning the Puritan roots of the English
expressions good boy and good girl. While her invitation to see a
cultural model of child rearing in an historical light must be applauded, her
strategy for tracing its continuity and change is criticized in this comment. The
concept of cultural models appears as a good candidate in the effort to construct an
historical perspective within cultural psychological theorizing, but the role of the
NSM as a useful tool to that end seems unclear. |
