Summary:Transient characteristics of optical nonlinearity originating due to photothermal effects in liquid crystals has been characterized by use of heat-conduction analysis. The response time determined from the time-dependent heat-conduction analysis was in good agreement with that obtained from experimental observation. The transient properties including dependence of incident beam diameter and film thickness of liquid crystals are also explained by the theory described in this paper.
