Stimulation of a viroid-like syndrome and the impairment of viroid infection in Gynura aurantiaca plants by treatment with silver ions

Summary:Spraying the foliage of Gynura aurantiaca DC plants with a solution of silver nitrate produced morphological changes, including stunting, leaf epinasty and rugosity, similar to those induced in this host by infection with citrus exocortis viroid. The effects ranged from mild to severe depending on the concentration of silver nitrate used over the range 50–1000 mg 1 −1. Silver ions also increased the levels of two polypeptides in the host of the same molecular weight as those induced by viroid infection. At low concentrations (100 mg 1 −1) silver ions impaired the establishment of viroid infection. These effects are discussed in relation to host-specified response mechanisms.
