Summary:Metal forming enterprises have undergone significant changes over the past decade. There have been similar marked changes in the nature of metal forming research. However, it is unclear that this has actually reflected the main concerns of the industry. One obvious difference is the trend to simplification and integration by the industry, whereas research solutions have tended towards greater complexity. The tensions and challenges produced by this are discussed with examples of different research/industry collaboration scenarios.
